Bells Beach

It's a hell of a drive just to get to Bells Beach from Melbourne; you have to go way past Geelong and then down a road that would have been dirt in the not too distant past. It's tucked away in the middle of nowhere, but it's an amazing view, and an amazing wave. Bells Beach is an almost mythical surf break, and possibly the most famous wave in Australia (although Burleigh Heads, Narrabeen, Snapper Rocks and Margaret River might argue against me on that one). I didn't have a board with me, so I didn't get to have a go, but even in early Autumn the water looked to cold for my soft arse Gold Coast constitution anyway. What's weird about Bells Beach is that you can drive past it to the Great Ocean road and head west for a few hours and not see any other decent waves — I'm sure they're out there, but you'd think the swell would be more consistent, considering there's not much between this part of Australia and Antarctica.
