Ruined Lighthouse, Cape St George, Jervis Bay

The ruined lighthouse on Cape St George, just north of Wreck Bay, has a fascinating history. Basically they built the thing in the wrong spot and it actually lured ships onto the rocks instead of warning them away (they don't call it Wreck Bay for nothing). According to the plaque it was destroyed with explosives (not during naval aircraft target practice as is the local myth) soon after it was abandoned in 1889.

The lighthouse is a few kilometres down a dirt road and a lot of people don't even know it's there, but it's on a spectacular bluff with amazing views. You really get a sense of remoteness at this place, but it's magical.

You can read a bit more about the history at the Lighthouses of NSW website
